Google AI Overviews: how to win the customer before classic results
The AI summary appears above position 1 and answers the question immediately. It eats some clicks — but for source brands it is a new visibility slot.
How Overviews selects sources
The summary is assembled from pages Google already considers high-quality on the topic, but with a bias towards structured and unambiguous answers. A top-5 page with a clear structure appears in the summary more often than a top-1 page with a wall of text.
What to do with content
- A direct answer to the question — in the first 2–3 sentences of each section, no preamble.
- Question-based headings (H2/H3) mirroring real query formulations.
- Tables and lists for comparisons — Overviews cites them almost verbatim.
- Freshness: an update date and current figures noticeably improve your chances.
Track more than just clicks
Appearing in the summary is a brand impression before the organic results. In Search Console look for 'impressions growing + CTR falling + branded queries growing': that is what working Overviews presence looks like. Losing some informational clicks while gaining the mention and branded demand is a fair trade.
In practice: in our projects, pages rewritten to a 'question → answer → details' structure appear in Overviews 2–3× more often than the originals — without any link changes.
